Pub sign 1 and 2 were in response to looking into pub signs and why pubs use them, they are used to advertise a product or entice someone to come in and spend money. I decided to put a spin on this and advertise the harsh reality of pubs. Coming off of a stretched canvas was important for these pieces as working on a hard, flat surface reflected that of writing on a chalkboard of which I have experience with as I write the pub signs at my job.
Murmuration piece was again to challenge myself by not finishing the piece and displaying it as this made me feel uncomfortable to do so. Usually a piece is not deemed finished to me if I do not finish painting all of it, but challenged myself to see what effect it would give if I left elements blank. Again, working on unstretched canvas was important here was I could control the size and shape of it and felt more personal to me

While I have explored different art styles at my time in art school, I found that my preferred style is that of realism and wanted to show this by creating a painting depicting the customers at the pub. The main focus of this piece is the customers and their conversation, allowing the viewer to feel as if they are part of the group themselves. The element of conversation was important to this piece, as well as the aspect of drinking while socialising being an element of social culture- particularly in the UK. Third spaces were also important to this piece, pubs and bars are some of the last third spaces we have to socialise and the closure of pubs also means the closure of a third space.

Anything else for you? was made for my degree show piece and is a culmination of what I have learned about combining art and pubs but also my career and art. I wanted to incorporate the entire space and also allow the audience to become part of the piece too.
Customer's perspective is of the bartender looking bored at work, it being a self portrait was important as the project has been personal and about the pub I work at so it made sense for the bartender to be me. If the audience faces this painting they are the customer
Bartender's perspective shows three different people at the bar, the audience do not know who these people are and what relation they have to each other, similar to how the bartender would not know. When the audience faces this piece they are the bartender
The text was incorporated to show the repetition of words that a bartender would say during their shift, it also allows the space to become busy and loud like a pub would be.

Liv Morgan is an emerging artist based in London and is currently studying Fine Art and Art History at Kingston University.
Her work is currently based on the pub that she works at. While exploring a range of art styles at university, she has resorted back to painting in a realistic manner, as she did before attending art school. She has an interest in looking at the community in the pubs and explores what community means to her. As well as this, she has also looked at showing the pub through art, for example using pub signs and collaborating with the customers to make art as well.
